President's Message

The Annual General Meeting of the BTA was hosted by the Sydenham Club from September 16 to 18. The Friday night reception at Grey Roots Museum was noteworthy due to the exceptional architecture of the museum and interesting exhibits of Grey and Bruce counties. It is located on Grey Road 18, just west of Rockford. The meeting was held at Shallow Lake Community Centre and the Niagara Club members who attended were June Green, Frank Delogu, Margaret Kalogeropoulos, Andy Panko, Keith and Ruth Rae. Andy was one of 9 directors elected at large. Regrettably Andy has subsequently had to resign due to business pressures; but we are pleased that he will carry on as our Past President.

In September 24, about 35 people celebrated the culmination of the Run For The Future. Over half of the $23,000 raised was slated for the Escarpment Legacy Fund, the remainder to charities of the donors choice.. Between Clayton and Marc, the two runners, over $16,000 was raised. Clayton Smith's wife Lee-Ann and children Jonathon, Jared, Jaxen and Lacey and Marc Hamel's wife Patricia and children Nicole, Natalie, Luke and Matthew provided an enthusiastic welcome for their lately absentee heroes who covered 850 kms in 15 days. Our Niagara Bruce Trail Team didn't raise a lot of money but I thank all those who donated. I hope we can double our efforts for next year as Clayton considers this first run successful and plans to do it again next year.

The following weekend saw a good turnout at the annual Bruce Trail Day on Sunday October 2 and you will see a story in this issue. The project was spearheaded by Dean Douglas and Dave Walters and I wish to thank all who participated in any way.

By the time this reaches you, we will have had our annual Landowner's Appreciation Dinner, a chance to acknowledge our gratitude to those fine people who support the aims of the BTA and allow the Trail to go through their properties.

Let Ruth and I be among the first to wish all of our readers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Club members at the Annual General Meeting of the BTA on Sept 17.

Landowners Appreciation Dinner

About 130 people, including 35 landowners attended the annual Landowners Appreciation Dinner, on October 29th. Grace Bevan did a superb organizing job. The Fiddling Gems provided pre-dinner music and Ruth and Keith Rae after dinner songs and comedy. The food was terrific as usual. Liz Reaker's coordination skills and the superb dishes provided by the members guaranteed a feast! Beer and wine sales went well due to bartender Don Duggan and ticket sales person Dave Walters.

Thanks are extended to those who delivered calendars and invitations to our Bruce Trail landowners. Not all landowners are home when delivery is made but it is a real pleasure to be able to say a personal thanks to the wonderful people who share the same aim as our club members.

A message from the Bird House of Fred Azzopardi

I realize our End to End is 6 months away but 2006 is a special year for me. I am celebrating my big year and also 10 years of being a member of the Niagara Bruce Trail Club. I set a goal of having 100 hikers do our Niagara End to End including maybe a few hikers from our Club this year. So please help me reach my goal...... This is it!!! Rose and Jack let me reach the top of the world and make my dreams come true.

SUSQUEHANNOCK LODGE AND TRAIL CENTRE
Carol Szymanik, Susquehannock Lodge, 5039 US 6 West, Ulysess, PA, USA, 16948

I have led hikes for the Toronto and Iroquoia clubs for many years and five times a year I lead hikes in north central Pennsylvania.

New Years, December 28 to January 1
Space is always tight for this period.

Unwind from the holiday season with some shorter hikes and more time by the fireplace

The Lodge is located in Potter County, Pennsylvania, 2 1/2 hours south of Buffalo. There is no agriculture or industry in the area, just lots of good trails. Daily hikes of 10 to 15 km are led through hardwood forest, many beside mountain streams.

Our lodge provides comfortable accommodations and excellent meals for $55 to $60 US per day. A day off hiking can be spent relaxing on the deck or exploring the local small towns.

Presentation by Brenda Zadoroznij

Brenda Zadoroznij will be giving a presentation, "The Niagara Bruce Trail - a Footpath Through History", to the St. Catharines Historical Society at the Lock 3 Museum on February 23, 2006 at 7 PM. She will be highlighting historical spots along the Trail in our area. Everyone is welcome.
