President's Message - February 2004

Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday afternoon, April 18, at Rockway Community Centre. This is the most important meeting of the year, as we ratify all our decisions, say goodbye to some long standing members of the executive, and welcome several new folks to the Board. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible there, and at the pot luck feast to follow. More information as we get nearer the date.

With the AGM on the horizon, now is the time to start thinking seriously about your interest in a position on the Club's executive. Working on the Board gives you a chance to help set Club direction, and really get to know the ins and outs of how the Club operates, and what makes it tick. Please contact Past President Jim Rainforth, Chair of our Nominating Committee, if you would like to serve on the Board.

With the coming of spring comes a sharp increase in activity with respect to trail maintenance. This is a big job every year, all year long, and can only be accomplished by volunteers like you. Dave Walters would like to hear from anyone interested in trail maintenance, and you can email him at david.walters@sympatico.ca .

Happy Hiking !!

Andy Panko     President
Niagara Bruce Trail Club

Marion Patten Painting Ticket Sales Report

A number of people have forwarded the ticket stubs and money to me by mail and I would urge the remainder to make every effort to complete the sales process by the end of April.

Instructions are in your sales kit for submitting the stubs and money and if you have questions phone me at 905 892-6633. This is an important fund raiser and the chance to win an admirable painting.

Many thanks
Keith Rae

Trail Maintenance Directors Report

Thanks to the folks who responded to my request for Trail Captains. Welcome aboard to David Spencer, Marion Roggeband and Bob Norminton. Thanks to retiring captain Kathryn Lye.

The Upper Canada Heritage Trail which runs from behind St. Davids Golf Course to Niagara-on-the-Lake is still available. Most of this trail is designated as multi use and would be ideal for a biker to maintain. Any takers?

We will have a busy season in the spring. We will be building a new bridge at Km 67, adding a handrail to the bridge at km 52.4, replacing a stile at km 58.70 and building steps up a steep muddy section on the East Dell Estates section. We also have a huge cleanup project on some recently acquired properties in Merritton.

I have a short list of volunteers that are regularly called on to work on projects such as these. If I haven't been calling you then you are not on the list. If you want to be included in our work parties please call me at (905) 646-2461 or Email to david.walters@sympatico.ca

The only requirement is enthusiasm.

The Club will be offering a chain saw course in the spring. I plan to attend and would welcome any interested parties to join me.

See you on the trail.
Dave Walters

The Newsletter Editor Speaks

I would like to thank all those who have submitted reports and articles to me for the past two years. Also a very special thank you to David Brown and all the envelope stuffers for their generous assistance, I couldn't have done it without each and everyone one of you.

It has been a pleasure to serve as your newsletter editor, but new interests have taken me in down another trail for now.

I sincerely hope your new editor enjoys working with you and for you as much as I have.

As Always, Happy Hiking
Barbara Henderson
