The President's Report

West Nile Virus Alert:

On July 24th, I received a call from the Niagara Falls Office of the Public Health Department advising that the virus had been confirmed in a crow found near the intersection of Dorchester Road and Mountain Road, in Niagara Falls. This is close to the trail between km 5.9 and 7.1.

Personal Protective Measures

The following is quoted from the West Nile Virus Fact Sheet, (Public Health Department Regional Niagara):

· Minimize time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn

· Wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeved shirt when outdoors for an extended period of time or when mosquitoes are active

· Wear light coloured clothing

· Apply mosquito repellent to exposed skin. An effective repellent will contain 20-30% DEET. Products with higher than 30% DEET may cause side effects, particularly in children. Read and follow directions on the product and avoid repellents for those less than 2 years of age.

Congratulations to Trail Maintenance Coordinator Kym Burt, her Trail Captains and their supporting volunteers.

image of Kym Burt and Trail CaptainsAt the June 6th meeting of Regional Council, Kym, on behalf of the Captains and volunteers, was presented with the Region's Environmental Award in recognition of the excellent effort in maintaining the Bruce Trail and associated hiking side trails throughout the Niagara Region.

Coming Events:

Bruce Trail Day - October 6, at Queenston Heights Park by the cairn.

All member clubs have been asked to organize a "day" locally to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the official opening of the Trail. The public will be invited through publicity generated through the local media. Light refreshments will be served, a variety of hikes organized and information on the Trail will be distributed. The objective is public awareness of this treasure, the Bruce Trail, and to generate increased membership in the Niagara Club. We especially look forward to a good turnout from local members!

Landowners Dinner - November 9, at Rockway Community Centre.

A pot luck dinner, with Margaret Kalogeropoulos and Fred Azzopardi organizing and hosting.

Bruce Trail Association Annual General Meeting - September 20, 21 and 22 hosted by the Beaver Valley Club.

Look for details in the autumn edition of the Bruce Trail News.

Speaking of the Bruce Trail News, I sometimes wonder if we, as individual members of the Association take full advantage of this excellent quarterly publication. There is a wealth of Association news and activities included, as well as, being the "voice" of the Association on major policy issues. I read it and enjoy it! I hope you all do too.

Happy Hiking!

Trail Maintenance Report By Kym Burt

I am proud to announce that this past summer the Region of Niagara recognized our Trail Captains and myself with an Environmental Award in the Volunteer Category. Thank you to all of you who contribute your time, efforts, support and friendships. Colour copies are now available of the award for all Trail Captains

Several reroutes lately have given us a little more road walking. Much of our goal is to get off the road, but in these cases it was necessary, one hopefully temporary. The deep descent entering the east side of Firemen's Park has been eliminated. The trail now enters the Park in the north parking lot at the dead end of Dorchester Road, in Niagara Falls. Traveling east you now take the stairs into the Park and on down to the fishing pond.

Also in Grimsby, the trail no longer exits at Park Road. The trail now turns south, just east of Park Road, ascending to Ridge Road. From there you continue west.

Due to the lack of participants, the Chainsaw Workshop in May 2002 was canceled. Another Chainsaw Workshop is planned for October 2002 in Orangeville. BTA regulations state anyone operating a chainsaw for club activities must take this course. If interested please call me to reserve a spot. All equipment will be supplied. I can be reached at 905-688-9365.

Volunteering is Rewarding

The Club Executive recently mailed out a survey form. The mailing went to all the members who, when they joined the BTA, indicated that they wanted to volunteer

Some members may want to volunteer now but did not volunteer originally. The survey form has a large number of choices from 2 - 4 hours per year to 1.5 hours per week.. Please request a survey form by sending an e-mail message to pbea.enigma@cogeco.ca, telephone 905 - 356 - 3876 or drop a line to the NBTC's address,

NBTC, P.O. Box. 22042, St. Catharines, Ontario, L2T 4C1.

Requesting the form places no obligation on you. Try it you'll like it. Volunteering is great.

News from Rasberry House By BTA Appointee - Cecile Dillon

As we all know, volunteers are the backbone of the BTA. In order to maximize our considerable volunteer resources, a new position, Volunteer Program Director of the BTA has been established. Jackie Randell has now been hired for this position.

To further enhance our volunteer base, each club has been requested to add the position of Coordinator of Volunteers to their Executive. The purpose of this position is the coordinate the use of volunteers throughout the Club, and to facilitate the recruiting, training and recognition of all volunteers in the Club under the direction of the Volunteer Program Director of the BTA. If you enjoy working with people and would like to consider this position, please contact any member of the Executive.
