VACANCY
- Vice President on the Executive
The President's Report
By Jim Rainforth
May, June and July have been busy months for our club. In addition to the ambitious and well attended regular hike schedule, the Niagara End-to-End attracted more than 50 hikers and the always popular Laura Secord hike drew an equally large and energetic gathering. Thanks and congratulations to Vince Highcock (Niagara End-to-End), and Frank Delogu (Laura Secord), and their respective teams of volunteers for a job well done. A special thanks to Liz Reaker for not only preparing and delivering the end-of-hike lunch on both occasions, but for donating the lunch for the Laura Secord hike.
Kym Burt and her team of trail maintenance volunteers have been especially busy with maintenance, improvements and some minor but significant trail re-routes. I have walked the Niagara section many times over the years and have never seen it in better condition than it is today!
Other executive members have been equally busy during the past three months and I will review some of their important activities in a future newsletter.
Looking ahead, the next three months promise to be equally busy. The BTA Annual General Meeting will be held close to home; hosted by the Iroquois Club it will be held in Grimsby, September 14,15 and 16. For more details see the Fall 2001 Bruce Trail News. The Niagara BTC will host the Hike Ontario AGM at the Welland Canal Centre October 19-21, 2001. (For more about Hike Ontario, see Bruce Trail News, page 24, Summer 2001). Additionally, remember the 14th annual Merrithon hike from Port Colborne to Port Dalhousie, October 13. Don Dugan and Dave Dewey are coordinating the hike.
Call Don at 905-935-3982 or write to him at 1034 Lakeshore Road West, St. Catharines, Ontario L2R 6P9 to register at $10.00 per person.
The executive continues to explore options related to the pedestrian crossing of the QEW near the CNR overpass, as part of the highway reconstruction process. You will be kept informed through the NBTC Grapevine of developments as they occur.
Happy Hiking!
Jim Rainforth PresidentNotes from the New Landowner Relations Director
As you know, the 'Realize the Dream 2015' project has started. It is particularly important that our densely populated Niagara section of the Trail be preserved in this time of ever-increasing development in the Peninsula. For that reason, if any of our members learn about property that may be for sale please let me know. Our Niagara Bruce Trail Club can also be of service to someone who wishes to retain links with the land and who's name can be remembered in perpetuity. Please mark November 10 on your calendar when we will host this year's Landowner Appreciation Dinner at the Rockway Community Centre on Pelham Road (Regional Road 69). Note the new location.Margaret

Trail Maintenance Report from Kym Burt Fall 2001
It is with pleasure that I am able to report the Niagara section of our Trail is in very good condition due to the countless hours and efforts of many people. We can thank long time Trail Captains Larry Barton and Peter Behrns who have announced they will be retiring from their positions this year. They have done an exemplary job in the Louth C.A. from Robbins Ave. to Staff Ave. I can't thank them enough. They will be a tough act to follow. Please welcome new Trail Captain Ralph Maynard for Section #7. As a past Trail Worker I am confident Ralph will do a fine job.
