OPTIMATR (IBM-PC) Cat.# 000-A01-00
OPTIMATR is a computer program for computing the optical properties of a
range of materials that have a potential use as components in optical
systems. The program will run on any IBM-compatible PC with VGA, MS-DOS 3.1+
and with ANSI.SYS installed in the CONFIG.SYS file.
BACKGROUND
A thorough theoretical understanding of optical properties of materials
provides more than physical insight. The sound physical basis of these
theories allows meaningful interpolations and extrapolations to be made as a
function of frequency and temperature. This capability permits prediction of
accurate and comprehensive material properties when experimental data is
lacking, as is quite often the case. Furthermore, models provide a precise
and convenient means of communicating optical properties data and represent
an improvement over conventional figures and tables. Formulas are easily
programmed on a computer, providing quick and easy access to the complex
index of refraction for many materials. These results can be used to
calculate transmittance, reflectance, absorptance, scatterance, and emittance
of fibers, thin films, and optical elements, extinctance of aerosols, and
dispersion for optical design and performance modeling.
OPTIMATR computes optical properties, producing listings and plots on the PC
screen. Capabilities include:
* Index of Refraction
* Absorption Coefficient
* Scatter Coefficient
as functions of
* Wavenumber (cm -1), or Wavelength (um)
* Temperature (deg K)
MATERIAL DATA
The types of materials currently available include:
* Crystals
* Dielectrics
* Semiconductors
* Metals
* Glasses
The current materials list is presented on the last page of this brochure.
OPTIMATR is totally interactive and makes use of a range of computation
models and display capabilities.
COMPUTATION MODELS
OPTIMATR utilizes the following models for optical properties:
* Seilmeier
* One Phonon and Free Carrier
* Multiphonon
* Urbach Tail
* Mie Scatter
* Rayleigh Scatter
Executing Calculate produces a table of values for index of refraction,
absorption coeffecient, and scattering coeffecient. The table can be output
as an ASCII file, or graphed using the Graph function. Data in the material
file determine which models will be invoked.
INTERACTIVE TOOLS
The interactive menus are in several levels:
Calculate
* Recompute
* Graph
* File
Edit
* Name & Space Group
* One Phonon & Electronic
* Multiphonon
* Sellmeier
* Free Carrier
* Urbach Tail
* Scattering
