On
February 3rd, exactly one month ago, the news media was filled with the
story of Karla Faye Tucker in early February, '98. She admitted to killing
two people in a vicious drug-fuelled pick ax attack in 1983. A Texas court
decided she should die by lethal injection. "In our state, we do not grant
pardons or reprieves." The United Nations and Pope John Paul asked that
her death sentence be reconsidered.
Many
in the news media too, were sympathetic to the idea of giving Tucker another
chance. They portrayed her as intelligent, articulate and attractive. Television
cameras tried to show how much she had changed in the last 15 years. At
8 years of age, her mother introduced her to drugs. She became a hooker
at 14. Now she was a beautiful, born-again Christian who had married her
chaplain. She was witnessing to fellow inmates. Many people went to bed
on the eve of her scheduled execution breathing a prayer that it might be
stayed. There was one slim chance that could save her from death on Tuesday,
February 3, 1998.
Regardless of how you feel about this situation, we are
all scheduled to give our last breath. It may be sudden, it may be a very
long time from now. You may not be as guilty as Karla for the wrongs done
in your life, but we are all guilty in God's eyes. "All have sinned and
come short of God's glory." (Romans 3:23).
Yet,
like Karla Faye Tucker, God can change you to be a new person with a new
outlook on life, a real reason to live. Karla had one slim chance to save
her from death but you have one huge hope that can save you from eternal
death. This hope is in being sorry for the wrongs done in your life and
accepting the fact that Jesus died on the cross to give you life eternal.
Karla expressed that she was looking forward to dying, for she knew she
would go to heaven... a much better place than this earth. God can forgive
you as much as He forgave her. |

A
Suggested Prayer:
"Jesus, I am frightened by the fact that one day I may die
and not know where I could go. I do not want eternal death but eternal
life. I hear that you can give eternal life and pardon me from all
my wrongs. I am truly sorry for my sins and ask you to forgive them.
I accept the fact that you died on the cross for my sins and will
give me eternal life if I repent and turn to you. Thank you for pardoning
me and giving me eternal life. Amen!" |
***With angels cheering,
Karla Faye Tucker was given the Crown of Life as she passed from death
row to heaven at 7:00 pm, on Tuesday, February 3, 1998.
