From
his book, "The Jesus I Never Knew," Philip Yancey writes: "George Buttrick,
former chaplain at Harvard, recalls that students would come into his office,
plop down on a chair and declare, 'I don't believe in God.' Buttrick would
give this disarming reply: 'Sit down and tell me what kind of God you don't
believe in. I probably don't believe in that God either.' He would then
share the correct way of assuming who God was."
There are
many characters in the Bible who, while facing difficulties, demonstrate
their anger or disappointment with God. In frequent Psalms, David pondered
where God was. Elijah and Moses wondered if God had paid a visit to planet
Earth. Job accused God of not having human eyes to see his misery. Even
Jesus, dying on the cross, was incredibly frustrated; in His darkest moment,
He asked, "My God, why have you forsaken me?"
Expressions of doubt in God may lie in science, new age,
other religions, evolution or cosmology. Perhaps you have had tragedy in
your life. God asks us to "come and reason together, to search the truths
for when you seek me, you will find me." He told beleaguered Jeremiah, a
prophet who was imprisoned, "Call to me and I will answer you, and will
tell you great and hidden things which you have not known." Jeremiah 33:3.

In
a study of history, it is evident that no other figure has changed history
as much as the man, Jesus. No other personality has created real inner
joy and peace. He can change your history as well. He is interested in
you. He even knows your name! What kind of God are you searching for or
running from? Is it the same God that I know of? Is your definition of
God the same as mine?
A
Suggested Prayer:
"Jesus, God, wherever You are, there are many times when I
feel like Jeremiah, beleaguered and pressed from all sides. While
sorting out my life I have tried to do my own thing. I ask You to
show me great and hidden things which I have not seen so that I can
start making sense of this life of mine. I pray that You will change
my history. Help me to see what kind of God You really are. Thanks
for knowing my name. Amen!" |
