Life
can be harsh, yes, sometimes so cruel. A story on the news recently comes from
India where a Hindu contracted a serious case of typhoid. His family thought he
would die, but miraculously, after much suffering, he regained his health. He
was very thankful for the recovery and one day he went to the temple to give thanks.
Being of a lower caste system, he made sure he did not climb the stairs to the
holy shrine but knelt in a obscure place to pray.
A member of the upper caste system, living nearby, noticed this lower
Hindu brother kneeling and immediately became infuriated. He grabbed a piece of
pipe and began to beat the poor man until he died. The surrounding worshipers
looked on and gave no disapproval. The police were called but no charges were
laid. The poor man's family was devastated. This, their father and husband was
miraculously healed and now he was beaten to death for thanking his god for the
recovery. Life can be harsh, yes, so cruel.
You, too, may have experienced the unfairness of life. You and
I probably could share many cups of coffee and stories together. David in the
Psalms in the Bible also agonizes over where his God is at times. In most of the
Psalms he writes, he acknowledges that God sees through his troubles. There is
one Psalm, #38, where David cries out in anguish because of his predicament. This
time David does not have the where-with-all to acknowledge that God will see through
his troubles. David is so overwhelmed.

This Psalm ends on an
unhappy note, unlike other Psalms. But we know David continues to take comfort
in his Shepherd. The Bible does not say that the Christian life will be easy.
I heard it once said that roses do not grow on mountain tops but more often in
the valley. Interesting.
The story of the Hindu man had an unusual twist as reported
on the news. Many people in India are now turning to Christianity: they see changed
lives as others realize that Jesus can heal their broken hearts and lives. Daily
Wisdom reader, I challenge you to take this step that thousands of others have
already done. Find out how Jesus Christ can change your heart. Yes, life can be
so cruel but there is Someone who can heal our hurts.
